The Institutions That Built Me

Posted by Cooper Neel on

I wouldn’t be here without the right schools, the right teachers, and the right support.

From an early age, I knew I learned differently. So did my parents. They weren’t just supportive—they were relentless. They drove me across counties for testing, paid out of pocket for specialized learning support, and fought for every tool I needed to succeed. Without them, without those resources, I would have been lost in a system that wasn’t built for kids like me.

Those tools changed everything. A different way to tie my shoes. A trick with graph paper to make algebra make sense. Small adjustments, but each one a game-changer. It’s like giving a shorter kid a ladder so he can reach the apples just like everyone else.

With that support, I was able to thrive. I graduated high school, attended Texas Christian University (TCU), and learned to advocate for myself—something I owe in large part to AIM Academy. They taught me how to ask for what I needed: extra time on tests, notetakers, priority enrollment. Accommodations that weren’t luxuries—they were necessities. Without them, I would have struggled to stay afloat. Even with them, college wasn’t easy. But I had a fighting chance.

And that’s the point.

I was one of the lucky ones.

The truth is, most students with learning differences don’t get the help they need. Testing is expensive. Specialist support is rare. And often, these differences go undetected because they’re invisible in a way other neurodivergences aren’t. Kids who need different ways to learn don’t always get labeled—they just get left behind. Especially in lower-income communities, where access to educational resources is even more limited. These kids aren’t failing school—school is failing them.

And that’s why I started Coop Neurorefreshers.

I want to be part of the solution. I want to take what saved me—innovative teaching methods, individualized learning support, a belief in every student’s unique strengths—and help bring it to more kids. Every student deserves the chance to discover their superpower, whether it’s math, art, engineering, or something else entirely.

That’s why 20% of our profits go to the Coop Learning Differences Fund, supporting organizations that are fighting for kids like me. Because learning differently shouldn’t mean learning less.

It should just mean learning better.
